EURUSD Chart Analysis: Sessions, Levels, Pips
Last updated September 6, 2026
A EURUSD chart is the number of US dollars one euro buys. Reading it means reading a relative price of two economies rather than an asset: the pair moves on the expected interest rate path in the euro area against the United States. Structure is clean because the pair is the most liquid in the world, and volume concentrates in London and New York.
Key takeaway
EURUSD is quoted to four decimals with a fifth fractional digit, so one pip is 0.0001 and a standard lot pip is a fixed 10 US dollars. Volume concentrates in the London session and the London to New York overlap. Ranges are narrower and structure cleaner than on gold or crypto, and the moves that matter usually start with a scheduled release rather than with anything visible on the chart.
What makes a EURUSD chart different?
Every chart shows price. A currency chart shows a ratio, and that changes the reading in three ways.
There is no intrinsic direction. A stock can go to zero and a commodity has a production cost. A currency pair simply expresses which of two currencies is stronger right now, so long ranges are normal and multi-year mean reversion is common. Traders coming from equities often over-read a trend that is really a wide range on a higher timeframe.
Both sides move. A falling EURUSD may be euro weakness, dollar strength, or both. A dollar index chart beside the pair answers the question quickly and is worth the screen space.
Liquidity is exceptional and decentralized. EURUSD is the most heavily traded pair in the world, which usually means tight spreads and a chart that respects levels in an orderly way. But there is no central exchange: your feed is your broker's, so the exact wick of a candle can differ slightly from another platform's, and volume shown on a retail FX chart is tick volume, a count of price changes, not traded size.
What is a pip worth on this pair?
The fourth decimal place is the pip. The fifth, where shown, is a fractional pip, sometimes called a pipette.
EURUSD has a convenience that most pairs do not: the quote currency is the US dollar, so for a dollar-denominated account the pip value does not float. On a standard lot of 100,000 euros, one pip is 10 US dollars; on a mini lot, one dollar; on a micro lot, ten cents. That fixed relationship is why so many risk examples are written on EURUSD.
Two mistakes recur. The first is reading a five-decimal quote as if the fifth digit were the pip, which understates a stop distance by a factor of ten. The second is assuming the same arithmetic on a pair where the dollar is the base rather than the quote, where the pip value moves with the rate. Our pip value calculator does the conversion for the pair and account currency you actually use, and the position size calculator turns a stop distance into a size.
Which sessions matter for EURUSD?
The pair trades continuously from the Asia-Pacific open on Monday to the New York close on Friday, but its character changes by session.
Asian hours. Euro-area participants are absent and volume is thin. The pair often traces a narrow range that becomes a reference for the rest of the day.
London. The deepest euro liquidity of the day. European data lands in the morning and the London open is one of the two moments when a flat chart starts to trend.
The London to New York overlap. Both major centres are open, US data typically lands in this window, and the widest candles of the day usually print here.
The New York afternoon. London has gone home, liquidity thins, and moves often lose conviction or drift back into the day's range.
Nothing about a screenshot tells you which of these you are looking at unless the time axis is legible and you know its timezone. If your method depends on session timing, read our guide to ICT kill zones, and state the session explicitly whenever you ask anyone, human or model, to read the chart.
What timeframes do EURUSD traders use?
| Horizon | Direction chart | Execution chart | Typical focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intraday | 1-hour | 5-minute or 15-minute | Session ranges, data reactions |
| Swing | Daily | 4-hour | Multi-week ranges, round numbers |
| Position | Weekly | Daily | Policy cycles, long ranges |
The pair's daily range is modest relative to gold or a high-beta stock, which has a practical consequence: the same percentage risk requires a tighter stop in pip terms, and spread and slippage are a larger share of a small target. That is one reason very short-term EURUSD trading is unforgiving even though the chart looks tidy.
Which patterns show up most on this chart?
- Range building then session expansion. The single most repeated intraday shape, usually an Asian range broken at or after the London open.
- Sweeps of the prior day high or low. These extremes hold resting orders, so price is drawn to them. See liquidity in trading for the mechanism.
- Clean horizontal reactions. Because so much volume is concentrated, support and resistance levels on the daily chart tend to be respected more than once.
- Round-number behaviour. Big figures such as 1.10 or 1.05 attract order flow and often produce a pause or a fake break.
- Post-release reversals. A data candle that runs, stalls, and retraces most of its range within an hour is a familiar EURUSD shape and a familiar way to be stopped out twice.
Multi-day trends do occur, and when the rate outlook in the two economies genuinely diverges they can persist for months, which is the case for keeping a weekly chart in the stack.
What correlates with EURUSD?
The dollar index. EURUSD is the heaviest component of most dollar indices, so the two are close to mirror images by construction. This is a definition rather than a discovery, and treating a dollar index chart as independent confirmation double-counts the same information.
Other European currencies. GBPUSD and the Swiss franc often move with the euro against the dollar, so a euro move the rest of the bloc does not confirm is more likely to be pair-specific.
Rate differentials. The expected gap between euro-area and US policy rates is the underlying driver. It is not on the chart, and it is the reason a technically perfect setup can be overwritten in seconds.
Risk appetite. The link is weaker and less stable than for commodity currencies, and it explains moves after the fact more reliably than before.
A repeatable way to read a EURUSD chart
- Confirm the instrument and the feed. Spot EURUSD from your broker or a futures contract with rollovers in the series.
- Start on the weekly and daily. Mark the swing highs and lows and the big figures near price.
- Add the session layer. Prior day high and low, the Asian range, and the current session open.
- Check what is scheduled. Central bank speakers and macro releases in the next few hours change how much weight an intraday level deserves.
- Describe before you decide. One sentence on what price has already done, written before any view about what comes next.
- Name the invalidation. The level that, if traded through, means the read was wrong, and size from that distance rather than from a round number of pips.
Steps four and six are where most EURUSD damage is avoided. The chart is tidy enough to inspire confidence, and the pair's low volatility invites larger positions, which is precisely the combination that turns one surprise release into an outsized loss. Our note on how to set a stop loss covers the sizing side.
How does an AI read a EURUSD screenshot?
On a clean EURUSD chart an AI chart reader does the mechanical work well: it reads the swing sequence and names the trend, marks the levels price has reacted to more than once, reads an RSI or MACD panel if it is visible, and lays out bullish and bearish scenarios with an invalidation level for each. The pair's orderly structure is close to a best case for that kind of read.
The limits are specific and worth stating plainly. A screenshot contains no interest rate expectations, no economic calendar and no positioning data, which is most of what actually moves the pair. Unless the time axis is legible and you name the timezone, the model does not know which session it is looking at. It reads levels off the axis, so on a compressed scale it estimates rather than measures, and a level quoted to the pipette from a small image should be treated as approximate. It also cannot tell tick volume from real volume on an FX chart, because the label looks the same. A useful AI read on EURUSD is a structural summary with explicit uncertainty; a forecast is not something the image can support. Our page on best AI for forex trading works through the same boundary in more detail, and AI chart analysis explains the screenshot workflow itself.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a pip on EURUSD?
- One pip on EURUSD is 0.0001, the fourth decimal place. Most platforms also quote a fifth decimal, the pipette or fractional pip, worth a tenth of a pip. On a standard lot of 100,000 euros the pip value is fixed at 10 US dollars because the quote currency is the dollar, which is why EURUSD sizing arithmetic is simpler than on pairs quoted in another currency.
- Which session is best for trading EURUSD?
- The London session carries the most euro volume, and the overlap with the New York morning is usually the busiest and widest-ranging window of the day. The Asian hours are typically quiet for the pair and often build a narrow range that later sessions break. Which window suits you depends on your method, not on a universal best.
- Why does EURUSD move on interest rate news?
- A currency pair is a relative price of two economies' money, and the main driver is the expected path of interest rates in each. European Central Bank and Federal Reserve communication, plus the inflation and employment data that shape expectations, reprice that path. None of it is visible on the chart, which is why a calendar sits beside any EURUSD read.
- How many decimal places does EURUSD have?
- Conventionally four, with a fifth fractional digit on most modern platforms. A quote of 1.08452 means 1.0845 with a half pipette. Confirm the display on your own platform before converting a chart distance into money, because a stop set in pipettes when you meant pips is a tenfold sizing error.
- Is EURUSD good for beginners?
- It is the most liquid currency pair, which usually means tight spreads and orderly structure, and that makes the chart easier to read than a thin cross. Liquidity is not safety: the pair is traded with leverage, and leverage is what turns a small adverse move into a large account move. The instrument is straightforward; the risk management is the hard part.
- What is the difference between spot EURUSD and euro futures?
- Spot EURUSD is an over-the-counter quote from your broker or liquidity provider, with no central exchange and no single official price. CME Euro FX futures are exchange-traded contracts with a defined contract size and an expiry, so their charts include quarterly rollovers. The two track closely but they are separate instruments.
