There are no official sessions, but participation varies in a stable way.

Weekday US hours carry the deepest books and are when macro news and equity moves transmit into crypto most visibly.

Asian and European hours are active enough that genuine trends start at any time of day, unlike an exchange-traded instrument where the open dominates.

Weekends are thin. Books are shallower, percentage moves can be large, and weekday liquidity often undoes them. Many traders explicitly discount weekend structure rather than marking levels from it.

Exchange-listed futures follow a session schedule, so their charts contain gaps that spot charts never show. Those are artefacts of the venue's hours, not events in the underlying market.

The higher the volatility, the higher the practical floor on timeframe.   • Round-hundred reactions. Whole hundreds act as support and resistance with unusual consistency in a retail-heavy market.

Spot, perpetuals or dated futures?

The same three instruments exist here as on bitcoin and they are not interchangeable. Spot ETHUSD or ETHUSDT is the cash market on a given exchange. Perpetual futures are leveraged contracts with no expiry, held near spot by a periodic funding payment, and they are where forced liquidations produce the sharpest wicks. Exchange-listed ether futures have a fixed size, an expiry and a session schedule, so a continuous chart of them contains rollovers and gaps that never happened in the cash market.

Levels do not transfer cleanly between the three. A sweep on a perpetual contract may be a few dollars short of a sweep on spot, and if your stop sat in that gap the difference is the whole trade. Pick the series you analyse on, mark your levels there, and execute on the same one.

Risk assets and the dollar. Crypto broadly trades with high-growth equities and against a strengthening dollar, more tightly around macro events than in quiet periods.

The rest of the smart contract sector. Tokens tied to applications and scaling networks tend to amplify ether's direction, so a move the sector does not confirm is worth a second look.

How to use the ETHBTC ratio in practice

The ratio chart is read exactly like any other chart, with one difference: its levels describe relative strength, not price.

Start with its trend. A rising ETHBTC means ether is outperforming bitcoin over that window, whatever the dollar chart is doing. A falling ratio in a rising ETHUSD means the dollar gain is a market gain that ether is only partly capturing.

Mark its ranges. The ratio spends long periods inside broad bands, and its boundaries tend to be respected in the same way price levels are.

  5. Discount weekend structure unless your method explicitly accounts for thin books.
  6. Describe, then decide, then name the invalidation, and size from that distance.
